Discovering that the police are considering arresting you can be terrifying. It’s the sort of thing that can cause people to react without giving due thought to the possible consequences of their actions.
It’s possible that actions that make sense to you at the time could lead to you facing additional charges. Here are some you need to avoid.
Resisting arrest
The urge to flee or fight might come naturally to you when someone goes to grab you. Yet, if that person is a police officer, you could face charges of resisting arrest. You could also end up getting hurt or even killed. Do be careful, as it does not always take much on your part for the police to consider you are resisting their attempts to arrest you.
Tampering with evidence
A court will want to see evidence showing you committed the charges you are accused of. So, it might seem logical to try and destroy such evidence before the police get to it, or to alter anything incriminating to make it less so. Be aware that both could lead to charges of tampering with evidence. Remember, too, that there are often ways to retrieve evidence anyway, especially if it is digital, so your efforts might be in vain.
Encouraging others to help you
Various charges could arise for you and others if you ask people to help you. For example, if you ask someone to hide you or help you escape, they could face charges for that. If you ask someone to alter their story you could face accusations of witness tampering and they could face charges of obstruction of justice if they do what you ask.
Seeking legal guidance as to what you can do to help your situation is a far more effective option than trying to come up with ideas yourself.
